From Audit to Action: How Sustainability Reviews Can Strengthen Your Brand

In honor of Earth Week, we’re proud to share a recent project that brought together environmental stewardship, operational insight, and strategic communications.
Over the past several months, volunteers from the Hilton Head Island Chamber’s Environmental Affairs Committee, including our own Communications Project Manager Phoenix Smith, partnered with the Sonesta Resort to conduct a comprehensive sustainability audit. What started as a series of interviews across department (engineering, food and beverage, rooms, culture, and operations) quickly evolved into something bigger: a roadmap for how sustainability can be embedded into both how a business operates and how it tells its story.
From Operational Efforts to Public Perception
Sustainability is no longer just a behind-the-scenes initiative—it’s part of the brand. But here’s the challenge: many organizations are already doing meaningful work operationally, yet very little of it is visible to customers, guests, or stakeholders. That’s exactly what we found. Across multiple departments, there were strong efforts already underway:
  • Energy-efficient systems and infrastructure
  • Reduced paper usage through digital tools
  • Community engagement and environmental education
  • Early steps toward waste reduction and recycling
And yet, much of this work wasn’t being communicated. For marketing and communications professionals, that’s a missed opportunity.
The Gap Between Doing and Showing
One of the most valuable outcomes of this audit from our perspective was identifying the gap between:
  • What organizations are doing, and
  • What their audiences actually see and understand
In guest-facing environments like hotel rooms, restaurants, and public spaces, small changes in messaging can have a big impact:
  • Signage that explains conservation efforts
  • Clear recycling instructions
  • Digital storytelling through in-room media or QR codes
  • Staff equipped to explain the “why” behind sustainability practices
These are not just operational improvements, they’re brand touchpoints. Sustainability as a Storytelling Strategy For organizations in both the public and private sectors, sustainability audits offer more than a checklist—they offer content. They help uncover:
  • Tangible actions that can be shared with stakeholders
  • Data points that support credibility
  • Stories that connect local impact to larger environmental goals
In this case, we also saw how location plays a powerful role. Hilton Head Island’s natural environment, its beaches, wildlife, and protected ecosystems, creates a shared responsibility for businesses and visitors alike. That sense of place becomes a compelling narrative that organizations can integrate into their messaging.
What We Learned
If there’s one takeaway from this project, it’s this: You likely have more sustainability stories to tell than you think. The key is identifying them, aligning them across departments, and making them visible in ways that resonate with your audience.
Putting Sustainability into Practice
This Earth Week, we encourage organizations to think about sustainability not just as an initiative, but as an opportunity:
  • To improve operations
  • To engage employees
  • To connect with your community
  • And to strengthen your brand
When sustainability is both practiced and communicated effectively, it becomes something much more powerful than a program—it becomes part of your identity. If your organization is interested in learning how to better communicate your sustainability efforts, we’d love to continue the conversation.

🌎 Happy Earth Month!
